ONEHUNGA LICENSING ELECTION.
TO THE ifDITOB. Sib, Allow me a few words to reply to Mr. Sheldrick on the above question. lam sorry he questions the veracity and integrity of the candidates nominated by the Temperance party ; still I think their characters will stand scrutiny, Mr. Sheldrick's opinion notwithstanding. If Mr. Sheldrick will read my former letter he will see I wrote to this effect :—" The Licensed Victuallers will actively support the so-called moderate ticket in expectation of favours to come ; " that is, the publicans expect the favours in return for their assiduous labours. Although I have to plead guilty to the accusation that I do not possess a very large amount of this world's goods, I certainly did not call in question either the moral, social, or commercial position of any of the candidates. Some parts of Mr. Sheldrick's letter are too profound to be grasped by my understanding.— am, &c, J. Muik Barb.
