Garrett, the delegate from Auckland, has informed me that the effect of the Conference will bo to enlarge the sphere of operations, and give security and permanence to the various funds connected with the Order. The proceedings of the Conference are to be published in pamphlet form. The charge of drafting the proposed amended Bill was entrusted to the Auckland delegate, and the members of the General Assembly for the various electoral districts in the colony are to be requested to give it their support when submitted to Parliament. THE COMMANDER OF THE FORCES. Sir George Whitmore has gone to Napier, where he will inspect the volunteers in that district. Be will be engaged there about ten days. He proceeds to Auckland shortly afterwards to inspect the various corps in the Northern capital. WHAU LUNATIC ASYLUM. "*" The tender of W. Stepheneon (£13,063), has been accepted for this work. Dowries, Dunedin, £15,756. THR WELLINGTON UNIVERSITY COLLEGE AND THE CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. At a meeting of tho directors of the Caledonian Society, held last evening, Dr. Macgregor stated that the evening olaases organised by the society for next winter would, as announced by the Chairman of the Education Board, be merged in a college endowed by the Government, who intend to bring a Bill before Parliament with this object. In any case the evening classes will be started and carried on independently.
