THE SUNDAY BAKING QUESTION.
Leon Charrington, a baker, of Berwickstreet, was summoned at a London Police Court, a few days ago, by Thomas Venters, a journeyman baker, for unlawfully delivering, or causing to be delivered, certain bread at a house in Carnaby-streefc, on the Lord's Day. Mr. J. T. Grammer, solicitor, conducted the case on behalf of the Amalgamated Society of Journeymen Bakers. The complainant's evidence was that he and another person saw a man deliver bread at the house in question, and afterwards returned to the defendant's shop. The defendant, however, would not come out to talk to them, but theman who had delivered tho bread admitted that he was in Mr. Charrington service. ' Mr. Mansfield dismissed the summons on the ground of lack of direct evidence. The case, ho said, appeared to him to be a trumpery one, got up by a trades' union for the purpose of annoying people. The Act undor which the summons was issued was an old one, and, in his opinion, it was very hard that a person should be prevented from working on seven days in a week if he wished to do bo. Mr. Grammer observed that in consequence of the actions taken by the society, and the decisions which had been given by the magistrates, the master bakers had determined not' to bake bread on Sunday. The journeymen worked extremely hard during the week, and they felt that they ought not to bo compelled to labour on the Lord's Day.
