It is also ntated that the row of one-storey offices between Gwynne's Hotel and Hattricka will be raised by the addition of another storey. Recently it has beoome desirable to give access to the mines by a road here which crosses the railway line, but which of late years has not been used. Application was made by the Waikato County Council to the railway department, asking them to make a crossing on the railway at this road. Since the last meeting of the Council a reply has been received to the effect that the department, though bound to maintain a crossing, are not bound to make it, and inviting the Council to do so at its own expense. This the Council is not inclined to do, as the road was a publio road before the railway was constructed, and legal opinion is being taken whether, such being the case, the railway department is not amenable under a clause in the Public Works Act of having caused an obstruction to a public thoroughfare. Messrs. Ralph Bros, have discovered a valuable seam of coal on their property near Huntly, at the depth of 100 feet. It is of splendid quality. Aβ there has been a large area of land already proved to contain coal, there is every likelihood of a new mine being opened in a very short time. It is within half a mile of the Government railway line, and can be easily worked as it ia free from water or other disadvantages. Alexandra, Thursday.
