A meeting of the Board was held yesterday at their offioes, Viotoria Arcade. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. R. Waddel) and Messrs. Suiter, Kidd, Mays, and Maokechnie. Wanganui.— reference to the charge of £12 14s 6d, made at the Wanganui Hospital, for champagne and brandy supplied to Annie Chambers, who died in that establishment from puerperal fever, the Board received a communication from Mr. J. Graham, to whom the matter had been referred. He stated that he had found the father of the the patient, whose name was John Chambers, at present working at the Northern Boot and Shoe Factory, Hobson-street. He stated that he had been out of work for a considerable period, and was now not making more than 25s or 30s a week. He had a wife, two sons, and one daughter, all being out of work except the daughter, who was not earning enough to maintain herself. The father was unable to pay anything to what he considered a moat extraordinary account of liquors said to have been supplied to his late daughter, who left her home entirely against the will and wish of her relatives. A letter from the mother of the deceased patient, published in a Wanganui paper, was couched in strong terms against the person who had ruined her daughter. He had promised to marry her, and that was why she had gone to Wanganui. He had also made promises of assistance in money which he had not kept. It was resolved that the usual hospital charges be tendered in reply to the claim. Contributions. —A letter, dated Nov. 6, was reoeived from the Premier's Office, Wellington, acknowledging the receipt of a letter from the Board pointing out that section 40 of the Aot of last session does not come into operation until the first of April, and requesting the Government to reconsider their decision and stop the whole of the contributions of the bodies affected by that section from subsidies coming to such bodies and pay them to the Board's account. In reply, it was stated that the fact that section 40 was subsidiary to section 30 was overlooked when the letter of the Bth ult, was written, and that the whole of the contributions would be stopped in future as requested. The correspondence referred especially to the contributions from Waikato, Waipa, and Raglan. Hobson County.—lt was reported that the contributions from Hobson County were still unpaid. It was agreed that the application of an old man to be admitted to the Refuge from Hobson County shall be entertained when the contributions were paid, and upon the County Council undertaking to pay for the man's maintenance after the separation took place. University College.—-The following correspondence was read : — University College, Auckland, 15th November, 1886. Sib,—ln reference to my letter requesting the cooperation of the hospital authorities iu the establishment of a medical school, I wish to state that when 1 asked that the hospital should be thrown open for the Instruction of the medical students, I should have explained that there was no desire en m part that clinical instruction should be gives to students in their first year of study, and that as it is not intended to go beyond the first year at present, that portion of my application might be omitted. There Is every desire on the part of the University College to refrain from in any way interfering with the hospital work, but seek that general co-operation from the hospital authorities in regard to a dissecting-room, without which the proposed medical school could not prove a success.— I am, &c., G.
