THE CAIN CASE.
[BY TELEGRAPHS—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christohorcß; Monday. The fact that Detect Kirby was in Christchurch on Saturday gave rite to various rumours that he was engaged in hunting up evidence in the matter of Captain Cain's death. It is stated that the poison book of Mr. Watkins, the chemist at whose establishment Thomas Hall purchased colchicum wine in June last, is missing, and tbat an assistant of Mr. Watkins is now in Australia. As there is no clue to Hall having about that time purchased poison in Timaru at any other chemist's, it is understood that the assistant above referred to will be examined, and, if necessary, will be called to give evidence at the adjourned inquest. Mrs. Newton has been sent for from Melbourne in order that she may be cjtlled at the inquest.
