VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
Auckland Cavalry.— Lake, Northcote, and Long Bay detachments were drilled in the open ground near the Lake, on Saturday afternoon, by Captain Choimondelay Smith, practising amongst other manoeuvres skirmishing on foot. After the drill, Captain Smith addressed the troopers on various points of their exercises. We understand that the detachments of cavalry on the North Shore will have an encampment near the Lake for three days in the beginning of January, and that on one night of the encampment a sham attack will be made by the N avals, to test the smartnesa of the cavalry in vedette duty, &d. A considerable quantity of sub-mining stores have been received by the Defence authorities per Piako from London, as well as apparatus for electro-contaot mines. There is also a consignment of tools for sub-mining, and as the torpedo Corps, &c., is composed of mechanics any work in the garrison can be performed by them. Tha sub-mining stores, ko., we are informed by Lieutenant Falconer, are all of the latest pattern as approved by the home authorities after most exhaustive experiments. He considers that the Government of New Zialand baa done a very wise thing in waiting till the home authorities had finished their experiments before ordering their sub-mining stores, as the other colonies who have had theirs supplied previous to 1886 will lure now on their hands a lot of obsolete articles. Major Bodham arrives in Aaokland to-day by the Rotomahana from the South to inspect the defence works, electric light ihed, mounting of the new guns, and the whole of the new stores received.
