CORPORATION RETRENCHMENT.

The report of the special committee appointed to consider the state of the corporation and the necessity for retrenchment, has already been published in the Herald. The following schedule gives details of the proposed reductions—

Mr. Goldie moved the adoption of the report, and stated the work which the corn* mittee had dona in carrying; oat retrenchI ment, entering at some length into the ques- ; tion of Corporation finance. He would bare liked reduction in a different way to that of discharging workmen, bat bowed to the decision of the majority of the committee. Mr. Devobe seconded the adoption of the report Mr. Kidd moved that the clauses bo taken seriatim. Mr. Laßoche seconded the motion, and thought the committee had been going beyond their instruction in ordering the discharge of men. Mr. Devobe contended that the committee had not gone beyond their infractions in making the recommendations they had donethat the engineer should carry out the instructions of the Council. Mr. Crowtheb -urged the importance of adopting the report, when it was found that there was no work for men to do, it was necessary to recommend their discharge. Mr. Atkin still thought the committee had exceeded their powers in recommending the disoharge of men. Mr. Holland moved, and Mr. Clark seconded, " That part A, clause 31, in the report be struck out." The portion of the report referred to was as follows, " That the number of stone-breakers be reduced to twenty ; the necessary metal to be supplied by the stone-oruiher." Mr. Laßoohe suggested that it might be discussed separately. Mr. Crowtheb thought they should give charitable aid separately, and know what they were giving, and why they were giving it. Mr. Goldie thought that part of the report might be left over, and considered separately. Mr. Atkin said he agreed with all the report, excepting the clause they were discussing, and that, regarding the Mayor's salary, which, ■he thought, should be still further reduced, The amendment of Mr. Holland was then put to the meeting and lost, the names being :—For : Messrs. Laßoohe, Evans, Holland, Kidd, Trenwith, and Clarke (6). Against: Messrs. Cooper, Atkin, Dignao, Buchanan, Garratt, Crowther, Fhillipps, Devore, Goldie, Davies, and the Mayor (11). The report was then adopted. • '-- It was understood that the question of the employment of atonebreakers would be ' brought up agiin in considering several apj plications made by those who had been discharge on account of their inability for heavy 1 work,
