Mayhew, , of Spring Creek (Marlborough) Rifles, hae been cancelled, he having been convicted of embezzling the funds of the corps. The funeral of the late Puke Te Ao, who formerly represented the Western Maori District in Parliament, took place at Otake this afternoon. The Hon. Native Minister, accompanied by the Under-Secretary of the Native Department, left for Otake this morn* ing to take part in the sad ceremony. Mr. Ballance was warmly weloomed by the leading men of a largo number of natives assem* bled. The burial service was conduoted in the Maori language by the Rev. Mr. Mo Williams, Church of England missionary. About 2000 natives were present, and there was not the slightest sign of disorder OK drunkenness. CHBISTCHOROH, Thursday. The Canterbury Cricket Association htsa rescinded its resolution to play 22 men against the Australians, and have decided to play 18. The association also decided to aend an eleven to Wellington at Christmas. The Education Board have resolved to try to separate the training and practising departments of the normal school, in conse* quence of friction between the two departments interfering with the efficient and harmonious working of the school. The training department for students will remain under the control of the principal, and the practising department will be under the control of their respective teachers. In the Divorce Court to-day, Mr. Justice Johnston granted a decree absolute in Win throp v. Winthrop, and a decree niei on the petition of the husband in Walker v Walker and Skelton. The co-respondent in the latter case had lived with the respondent in Auckland till recently. Dcnedin 1 , Thureday. Hugh Mitchell, auctioneer, was to-day fined 10s and costs for selling after hours.
