ARE THE MAORIS DYING OUT?
TO THE XBITOR. Sir,—Governor Grey stated, in a despatch dated 1849, that the whole native race may be estimated at 120.000. In the census of 18S1 it is given as 44,097. In the previous census (1878) the numbers sre 43,595. This will indicate an arrest of the decay of the race; but can the 1878 census be relied upon ? There are a number of instances of a great decline of the Maorw in certain districts; but then again, 1 hear of their becoming stationary in some parts of the colony, and even increasing in other localities. Are there any well-authentioated instances of this being so? Will some of your readers kindly give me the benefit of their knowledge and experience upon thia ■übjeofc?—! am, Ac, Imjuibeb.
