WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
[FBOM OUB OWN COBKESPONDENTS.I Hamilton, Tuesday. It appears from the evidence on the inquest on the body of Mr, Prior, drowned in the late boating accident at Raglan, that the misfortune occurred from the too common practice of fastening the sheet to the thole pin, or the cleet. Cambridge, Tuesday. Mr. Northcroffc, the Resident Magistrate, who left Waikato to-day on a two months' holiday, reserved judgment till his return in the case of Hewitt v. Kinceid, where defendant strove to aet aside an agreement to lease on the plea of having been drunk at the time he signed. The case is a delicate one, involving future issues. The case of taking land to give Mr, Barugh access to his property from the CambridgeHamilton road is likely to meet with an easier eolation than was expected. It appears that the Cambridge Highway Board have no power to act in the matter at all. The Waikato County Council delegated to that Board the power to make and repair the road in question, which is a main road, but certainly not to act for the Council in other matters, such as putting in force the power under another Act of taking land for public purposes. The matter, therefore, will have to be taken in hand by the County Council, and the resolution affirming the taking of the land by the Cambridge Board, its action, and the rescinding of the previous resolution on Saturday last, all go for nothing.
