Odtwards Coastwise.—Paku, barge, for Tairua ; Nellie, cutter, for Whangapoua. The barque Helen Denny, owing to the boisterous state of the weather, was unable to be berthed yesterday. She is to be tahen alongside the Railway Wharf this morning, where she will put out her cargo. The barque has on board the greater portion of the pipen required for the Newmarket water supply, and also a number of pipes for the Rotorua Railway Company. The latter will be landed in trucks and taken up to their destination by rail. The Prims Albert is to go hence for orders to Valparaiso. She is expected to leave here to-morrow or Thursday next. The s.s. Clansman for Russell and Northern ports, and the s,s. lona for Mercury Bay and Tauranga, took their departure last evening with cargo and passengers. The Union Company's s.s. Australia, from Wellington and East Coast ports, came into harbour at 6 o'olook yesterday morning, and after Landing her cargo for here went up to the Sugar Company's works, there to take in a return cargo of sugar. The Australia comes up this trip in oharge of Captain George Orawshaw, who reports that she left Wellington on Thursday, the 14th, at 4 p.m., for Auckland via way ports, arriving at Napier on 15th at 3 p.m. ; moved, on again at 8.30 a.m., for Gisborne, experiencing strong S.E. winds to arrival on the 16th, at 5 a.m., landed passengers, but owing to heavy S.E. sea could not land cargo ; after lying eleven hours, moved on again at 5 p.m., rounded the East Cape on 17th, Sunday, at 2 a.m., experiencing fine, weather and smooth sea across the Bay of Plenty, arriving on Monday, the 18th, at 6 a.m. The Union Company's steamship Hauroto arrived in harbour yesterday shortly after midday, from Melbourne via Southern ports, with cargo and passengers. Captain Kennedy reports that the Hauroto left Dunedin on the 13th instant, at 4.20 p.m. ; arrived Lyttelton 9 a.m., on the 14th, left again at 9.30 p.m.; arrived Wellington, on the loth, at 11.30 a.m., and, after landing a large cargo, moved on for the North at 5.30 p.m.; called at Napier and Gisborne, and made fast to the wharf as above. She experienced moderate southerly winds and fine weather along the coast. The Hauroto proceeds to Sydney at 5 o'clook this evening, The schooner Columbia left Napier for this port on the 16 th inst. The schooner Maud Graham, from the Thames, arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon. The schooners Gisborne and Waiapn are now both on their return voyages to this port. The former left Gisborne on the 14th inst., and the latter on the 15th inst. They are both to call at way ports. The barque Medura, which arrived at Mercury Bay early last week from Noumea, in ballast, is to there load with timber for Sydney. She is expected to get away towards the end of the present week. The s.s. Arawata, en route to Fiji, left Russell Last evening. Owing to the strong northerly gale blowing yesterday, the barque Lutterworth, for London, and a number of other vessels abo ready for sea, were unable to get away. They, however, will take advantage of the first favourable change of wind. The s.s. Te Ansu arrived at the Bluff, from Melbourne and Southern ports early yesterday morning; but (a most unusual circumstance) she has no passengers from Australian ports for Auokland. Her list for Southern ports is unusually light. The schooner Fleetwing, at present at Grey mouth, is to go from that port to Timaru, and there load with grain for Auckland. The Northern Oo.'s s.s. Wellington, from Whangarei, arrived last night, with cargo and passengers. She is to leave again this evening lor the same port. The barque Min is at present putting out her cargo of sugar at Birkenhead in excellent order. The vessel is expected to complete her discharging to-day or to-morrow, and the barque William Turner will then take her place to discharge. _______

THE PILOT SERVICE. Sines the time that the Auckland Harbour Board sold their rights to the pilot service to Mr. F. E. Compton, the managing director of the Awhina Steaintug Company, the matter has been ocoupying the attention of those interested, and the action of the Harbour Board has by them been very generally condemned, particularly when it is seen that the Board are endeavouring to atop Captains Sainty and Cooper from also following the avocation for whioh they are licensed by the Board. When Pilots Sainty and Cooper were informed that their services were no longer needed by the Board, they naturally turned their attention to see what means of livelihood was open to them, and they, after mature consider atioa, decided (seeing that the compulsory pilot syatem was abolished) to try their luck as pilots; and, being possessed of certificates, they engaged a cutter, and have now been acting as pilots at this port since the ! beginning of the month, and with such efficiency that they now pick up vessels outside of Tiritiri, even off the Poor Knights, instead of waiting as heretofore off Bangitoto reef for strangers. This step on their part has given great satisfaction to the seafaring community, bat not so to the Tug Company or the Harbour Board, for on the one side it is looked upon as if Captains Sainty and Cooper are infringing upon some rights bought and paid for, whilst on tbe side of the Harbour Board they feel annoyed that these two gentlemen should step in and so spoil a contract made in private for the benefit of two or three. It most be remembered by the Board that both the pilots named hold certificates given, by the Board, and so long as they are kept unsullied oannot be fairly cancelled, though it may be urged by some of the Board that the Board have a right to them because they paid the oash for these two gentlemen's examinations. They would not have done this had they sot wanted their services, and having done so, and presented the pilots with their certificates, it would be looked upon with some amount of suspicion if they were now demanded baok, especially when Captain McGillivray is permitted to hold his whilst serving some one else, and for whose examination the Harbour Board also paid.' la the whole matter there is a feature connected with it that certainly does not show well'for some of the members of the Board, who are shareholders in the tug Awhina. Of course, we may be told that the contract is not with the Tug Company at all, but with Mr. Compton. Just so, but can the Harbour Board say that when the matter was under consideration, it was not decided that the Awhina's name should not appear, so only Mr. Oompton's was placed in the deed, but the Board knew well, and do still know, that the contract U in reality with the Tag Company

named. We have no complaint at preaen 1 with the manner in whioh that oompan is endeavouring; to carry out their pilo service, bat we do maintain that Pilot Sainty and Cooper have as perfect a right t act still as pilots— their own benefit—equal! as well aa Pilot MoGillivray has to act' for th benefit of someone else. The two firat-namei gentlemen have long been pilots at this port and did their work well, and no complaint cai be raised upon that ground, and we hope tha the Board, at its meeting to-day, will loo! fairly at the question, and proteot Pilots Saint' and Cooper in the right that they fairly ani justly hold, to not as licensed pilots for the por of Auokland and its vicinity.
