WELLINGTON NEWS NOTES.

[BY TBLKGRAPH.—OWNCORBKSPOSDSWT.I Wellington, Saturday. THE LOAN. The Colonial Treasurer has received officially the intelligence that the average price realised for the new loan is £97 ss, and that £2,000,000 was the amount tendered for. ASPECTS OF THE MONEY MARKET AFFECTING THE LOAN. The following remarks, which appear as a short leader in the Post this evening, are stated to embody the opinions of the colonial Treasarer as to the aspects of the English money market, which affected the floating of the loan. "Adverse criticism arose almoit immediately after its announcement. At the very first it was quoted at 1 per cent, premium, while it has realised very little over the minimum, Several causes may be assigned for this. In the first place, the New South Wales Budget with its deficit of two millions, and the Treasurer's somewhat bungling statement on the subject, must have had a most depressing effect on all colonial securities. Again, while the subscription was open, affairs in Europe assumed a most menacing aspect, the Russian Press declaring a peaceful solution of the Bulgarian situation to be almost impossible. The prospect of war always tightens the money market. We cannot help thinking alio that the peculiar amount of the loan militated against its success. Had the colony asked for a round two millions investors would have looked more favourably on the demand than on one for the peculiar sum of £1,567, CALEDONIAN SOCIETY. In connection with this society evening classes for young men are to be started. The movement has been promoted by Dr. Macgregor (Inspector of Asylums), Mr Blair C.E. of the Public Works Department, sent a few other enlightened and patriotic Scotchmen.
