THE GOLDFIELDS.
The LaMonte furnace at the Woodstock mine, Ohinemuri, started yesterday, and we learn that the slag is running freely. This is another attempt to work the LaMonte process, and it is to be hoped it may be successful. There is no doubt that the LaMonto process is a capital one, and is really effective in saving the gold, although the attempt to establish it at the Thames failed from other reasons to be economically successful. Then ton. —The mine manager reports that the country in the bottom of the shaft is still good, and that the contractors are making fair progress in the sinking of it. [BY TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Hokitika, Tuesday. The Ross United. — The returns for Saturday and Monday were 12ozs 12dwts and 15ozs lldwts respectively. The scarcity of hands is greatly limiting the output. The returns could be doubled if the hands were obtainable. The rate of wages is 10s per shift of eight hours, witb'steady work.
