At a meeting of the Orangemen of the Canterbury district, held on June 29, it was decided to cable to the Imperial Grand Master at home, offering men and money " to assist the Ulster men in their difficulty." A subscription list was opened, and nearly £200 was subscribed in the room. A resolution was passed to the effect that the Orangemen view with regret the action of the 52 members of the $ew Zealand Parliament who sent a cable message expressing sympathy with Mr. Gladstone. All through the colony a somewhat important mistake has been made in regard to one of the villages destroyed by the late volcanic disturbance. In the earlier telegrams the name was frequently spelled " Mourea," and naturally it is concluded that the wellknown settlement of that name on Rotoiti has been destroyed. This is not so. Mourea never was affected, except by the volcanic dust. The settlement destroyed was Mcura, on Lake Tarawera.
