It will be seen from an extract appearing in another column, made from the Christchurch Press, that correspondence about the disappointing effect of the New Zealand court at the Colonial Exhibition has been published in that journal, similar to what we have in former issues placed before the public. The writer takes the same view of the Agent-General's cable message to Sir Juhns Vogel as that already taken by us, that it tends to confirm the growing belief in this country; that, from whatever cause arising, the New Zealand Court is not the success it might have been. Reference is also made to the opinion expressed in private letters received in Wellington as confirmatory of that conveyed in like communications forwarded to other parts of the colony ; and they uniformly point to one conclusion, that our representation at the Exhibition does not reflect much credit on the colony. It is a great pity that it should be so, as a splendid opportunity of advantageously placing the capacity and resources of the country before the British public and the visitors from all nations has been spoiled, if not lost. It would seem that matters have not been proceeding quite smoothly between the managing commissioners, which may, to some extent, account for the defective arrangements complained of. But the radical cause of the disappointment which seems to be so generally experienced is unqestionably due to the failure of the Government to place on the commission a practical business man, whose function it would have been to have secured such exhibits as would have given a proper idea of the industries and products of the colony, and to have placed them to the best advantage in the Exhibition. It surely ought to be still possible to remedy to some extent this primary omission.
