NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Cox's Creek Bridge. — Mr. J. A. Macarthy, C.E., wrote for the information of the Council that the western end of Cox's Creek Bridge was in an unsafe position on account of it having sunk over an inch lately, and unless prompt action was taken a collapse might take place. The Mayor pointed out that, on visiting the bridge, he found that it was settling down, and several of the main supports were rotten. He moved that the immediate attention of the City Council be drawn to the structure. There was a heavy traffic over the bridge, and it would be dangerous to leave it any longer. Mr. Hastings suggested that it should also be intimated that the borough would bear the cost. Mr. Morrison seconded the motion, and thought the city would not raise the boundary question. The motion was carried unanimously.

Macarthy, C.E., wrote in reference to a report of the committee recommending his remuneration to be 9s for giving permanent levels intead of 12s 6d as heretofore. On the motion of Mr. Billington, seconded by Mr. Lee, the letter was referred to the Works Committee.

Lighting.—Mr. Riggs moved "That a gaslamp be placed at the corner of Sussexstreet and Rose Road." In reply to Mr. Prime it was stated that the lighting cost about £87 per annum. An amendment to defer the question for three months was lost, and the lamp was authorised.
