THE LOOP-LINE.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr. W. R Waddel) yesterday received the following letter, in reply to the petition sent re the Auckland to Penrose loop-line, from the Under-Secretary of Public Works, Wellington "Sir :I am directed by the Minister of Public Works to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 31st ult., forwarding m petition from the citizens of Auckland, urging that the construction of the projected new line of railway to Penrose Junction, via the beach and Hobson's Bay, might be proceeded with without delay. In reply, I am to sta-e that the Government! have had surveys made of the proposed line, which show that a practicable route, with easier grades than on the present line, is obtainable, but it appears that the cost of obtaining the necessary land will be very considerable, as already intimation has been received that heavy claims for compensation will be made in the event of this line being constructed, and some of the landowners have intimated that they will enforce the heaviest claims against the Government which the law will allow. Alternative proposals are, however, now being considered, and it is hoped that before long the Government will be iu a position to take steps to relieve the traffic in one direction or the other."
