ANNUAL LICENSING MEETINGS.

PARNELL. The annual meeting of the Farnell Licensing Committee was held in the Borough Council Chambers at noon on Saturday. There were present: Messrs. J. F. Clarke (ohairman), C. Wood, N. Pollard, M. Marriott, and Frater, Mr. J. B. Stoney was present as olerk, and Mr. Cotter appeared on behalf of the Trade Protection Sooiety and for the applicants. Alexandra Hotel.—Geo. Leech applicant. The chairman intimated that the committee had inspected and were not quite satisfied with the condition of the house, and until certain alterations were made they would not grant the license. It would be necessary that the existing fire-escapes should be made more secure, and an additional escape provided from the stair landing. They also required that the door opening into the bar parlour should be closed, and certain internal alterations made. They adjourned the application for a fortnight, in order that these alterations might be effected. Mr. Cotter, on behalf of the applicant, promised that the required alterations would be effected.

Old Windsor Castle.—James Stewart, applicant. In regard to this application the committee took exception to the fire-escapes, although the applicant pointed out that there was easy access to the verandah, and from thence by a ladder to the ground, but he would carry out the committee's suggestions, and on thin condition the license was granted. Exchange Hotel. —Frederick Tomlinson, applicant. This application was granted, conditionally on a division in the bar being removed. Sunday Trading.—The chairman said before the meeting clo«ed he desired to call attention to reports which had reached the committee with regard to Sunday and afterhour trading. He desired especially to call the attention of the applicants and others to the fact that if the law was infringed they would bear the matter in mind. Mr. Cotter said it was possible that these rerorts arose from disappointed persons, and he instanced a case in Auckland where the Magistrate directed a prosecution against the informer. PONSONBY. The licensing meeting for the Ponsonby distriot was held yesterday in the Resident Magistrate's Court-room, Present: Messrs. J. Gittos (in the chair), J. Elkin, W. Hutchinson, G. W. Owen, G. Plummer. There were two applications for renewals, Messrs. Stanford (Ponsonby Club Hotel), and John Nevill (Suffolk Hotel), and satisfactory reports of both being made and no objections tendered the applications were granted. MANUKAU. The annual meeting of the Manakau Licensing Committee was held on Saturday, the sth instant, at the Titirangi schoolroom. Present: Mr. Smith (chairman), Messrs. Carrol and Matheson, with the clerk, Mr. Seaman. After confirming the minutes of the previous meeting, and accepting a satisfactory inspector's report of the Titirangi Hotel, a renewal of the license was granted to John Rigby, [by telegraph.own correspondents HOTELS IN THE LAKE DISTRICT. Rotorua, Saturday. The annual Licensing Court was held yesterday. Mr. Humphries applied for a license for a hotel at the Terrnoes, Rotomahana. Ha had obtained an excellent site, and if the promise of a license were given he would immediately erect » first-class building- The Bench spoke favourably of the project, but as the block is on for a re-hearing, and the titles ' consequently not adjudicated upon, nothing in the matter could at present be done. Mr. Roger's application for a new house at Whakarewarewa was granted, and the several other licensees, on getting theu renewals, were cautioned against supplying liquor to the Maoris in the wholesale manner which has lately become a prevalent custom, in spite of laws to the contrary. The police are instructed to exert their utmost vigilance in the matter. A license for the Terrace Hotel, Wairoa, was refused.

TE AROHA DISTRICT. T« Aroha, Saturday. The annual licensing meeting was hold in the courthouse to-day, when there was a full attendance of the committee. Renewals were granted to James Warrin for the Palace Hotel, to A. Smith for the Hot Springs Hotel, to Thomas Hay ward for the To Aroha Club Hotel, and to W. H. Rioheson for the Family Hotel—all at Te Aroha; to Thos. Lawless, Waiorongomai Hotel, and Samuel and Smardon, the Premier Hotel, both at Waiorongomai. Renewals were also granted to Frank Rose, Royal Hotel, Oxford, and to Alexander Heany for aa accommodation license at Lichfield. Eleven o'olock licenses were applied for by the proprietors of the Hot Springs. Palace, and Te Aroha Club hotels, and granted. An application for a transfer of the license for the lastnamed house from Thomas Haywood to Mis* Emily Jex gave rise to some disoussion. Two members of committee opposed the transfer* not on account of Miss Jex's unfitness (for she produced excellent reference as to character and ability), but because they considered the occupation unsuitable for any single woman.
