Wellington, Sunday. The Court of Appeal will probably sit tomorrow to deliver judgment in the case of S. S. Downs, of the Pier Hotel, v. Sir William Fox, claim £5000, for an alleged libel published in a letter by the latter on March 9. The cabo has been settled by Sir William making an abject apology. - Sir William Fox admits that what he wrote did not refer to the Pier Hotel, and his apology states that since his letter was published he has learnt that Mr. Downs' is one of the best-conducted houses in the city. Sir William has to pay costs. Kumara, Saturday. At a public meeting last night, resolutions were paused urging or the Government t!.o necessity of connecting Kumara with the Hokitika-Greymouth line via Stratford and Waimu, and making provision for the work out of the new loan. Mr. J. N. Martin, contractor, fell over a high face into a mining claim on Thursday night, and lay for four hours before being discovered. He • aufferpd scalp wounds and lacerations. There was no doctor at Kumara Hospital, and he had to be taken to Hokitika.
