THE NEW HEBRIDES QUESTION.

A meeting of the Vigilance Committee appointed at the recent meeting of the various religious bodies in Auckland to watch over the proceedings in connection with the proposed cession of the New Hebrides to France was held on Saturday at the room of the Young Men's Christian Association. The Rev. J. Robertson presided, and there were also present the ven. Archdeacon Dudley, Revs. R. Bavin, R. Sommerville, Colonel Haultain, Captain Daldy, Messrs. J. H. Upton, Graves Aickin, and J. Buchanan. The chairman read telegrams from F. T. Sargood, Melbourne, urging the friends to strain every nerve to get Parliament to pass resolutions adverse to the French claim. On the motion of Captain Daldy, seconded by Mr. Upton, it was resolved to send a telerram to Sir G. Grey, asking for information as to the best means to be taken in view of promoting the objects of the meeting, the chairman and Colonel Haultain being appointed to forward the message. Steps were also recommended for obtaining further signatures to the public petition to -e sent to Wellington, Mr. Graves Aicken was appointed treasurer to the committee, and Messrs. Upton and Buchanan were joined with him as a general Bub-committee. It was resolved to ask Sir George Grey to present the petition,
