ANNUAL LICENSING MEETINGS.

NEWTON, The annual licensing meeting of the above district was held yesterday afternoon at Mr. Seaman's office. There were present Messrs. Warnock (chairman), Gittos, Partington, and Hellaby. Mr. Neumegan (for Mr. Cotter) appeared for Mr. Curnow. The business was for the purpose of considering the application made by Mr. B. J. Curnow for a rene.val of the license of the Northern Hotel. After some conversation, the Bench retired for a few minutes to consider the matter, and upon the meeting resuming the chairman announced that they had considered the matter, and had decided not to grant the license, on the ground that the house wa3 not required. The applicant applied for an adjournment for fourteen days, to allow him an opportunity to show that the bouse is required, and, in doing so, expressed his surprise at such a decision being given without being allowed to say a word in defence. It is intended to present to the Bench at its next sittings a petition, showing that the house is one greatly used by travellers. KARANGAHAPE. The annual meeting of the Karangahapa Licensing Committee was held at noon yesterday, in the R.M. Court. Present: Messrs. I). Goldie (chairman), J. Morrison, E. Wood, and H. Hirst. Mr. J. B. Stoney acted as clerk to the Bench. Superintendent Thomson appeared for the police, and Mr. T. Cotter on behalf of tho Auckland Trade Protection Society. The business consisted of applications for renewals, and a request for a transfer.

King's Arm? Hotel, Upper Pitt-street.— Joseph John Donovan was the applicant. Granted. Queen's Hotel, Karangahape Road.— Thomas Evans applied for the renewal. The chairman intimated that on account of there being so many changes in the management of this house recently, it had become a question to the committee whether the house was required, but they might.state that they had no objection to make to the present applicant. The annual meeting of the Waikomiti Licensing Bench was hold at noon yesterday, at Mr. Thomas Seaman's office. New Zealand Insurance Company's Buildings. There were present : Messrs. Parr (in the chair), Archibald, and Usher, and the Inspector. Mr. Seaman (the pecretary) read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed. The only business was for the granting of the renewal of the license to Frederick H. Clements for the New Lynn Hotel. The license was granted. MOUNT WELLINGTON. The annual meeting of the committee of the above district was held at two p.m. yesterday, at Mr. Thomas Seaman's office. There were present: Messrs. Stewart chair), Hunt, Thompson, and Blythe. The minutes of the last meeting, and the Inspector's report, were read and adopted. The 1 business was for considering the application for the renewal of the license of the Ellerslie Hotel, which was applied for by Mr. James Campbell. Mr. S. Jackson appeared for Mr. A. Cairns (the owner), who was also present. Mr. Jackson informed the Bench that it was Mr. Cairn's intention to expend £500 in putting the house in a thorough state of repair, and to make the place a really firstclass boarding establishment, and one tha<; would be a credit to the district. It was resolved to grant the renewal as applied for. POKE NO. The annual meeting of the Licensing Committee for the Pokeno district was held at noon on June 3 at the R.M. Court, Mercer. Present: Messrs. T. C. McElroy, J.P. (chairman), S. Hunter, Bell, Graham, and Wright. Sergeant Gillies appeared for the police. P Railway Hotel (Mercer).—The applicant was Mr. W. H. Porter. The police report was favourable, and the certificate was Railway Rkfrkshment Rooms (Mercer). —'Applicant, Fanny James.
