BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held in the offices, Victoria Arcade, yesterday afternoon. Present : Messrs. S. Luke (chairman), J. W. Carr, Theo. Cooper, J. H. Upton, D. Goldie, and J. M. Clark. Chaikman's Report.— The report of the chairman was as follows :—" Alexandra : Committee informed that Mr. Allright will inspect sohool building as soon as possible. Hoteo North : Approve recommendation of committee for sohool to be taught in alternate weeks during winter, eubjeot to oonaent of Tauhoa Committee. Puriri : Mr. F. C. Dean has been furnished with copy of description of boundaries of school district. Rotorua : Committee informed, in answer to telegram, that Board has decided to build aohool of kauri, but that alternative tenders may bo sent for studs and weatherboards of rimu free from defect. Tauwhare: Authorised supply of basket grate for school. Tryphena : Committee furnished with information as to employment of itinerant teachers. Teachers : —The following temporary arrangement has been made : Student from Training College to Newton East during vacancy in appointment of assistant teacher. Mm. H. Osboldstone : Petition from parents of Parawai has been referred to committee. Mrs. 11. J. Kllis : Explanation sent as to calculation of salary. Mr. VV. N. Mclntosh : Referred to regulations as to salary for Epsom. Miss E. M. J. Lewis : Explanation sent aa to payment of salary. Miss F\ L. Maokin : Furnished with a certificate of her service under Board. Mr: G. M. Calvert: Explanation ecnt as to his classification and status. Mr. R. C. Maclaurin : Referred to requirements of paragraphs 69 and 70 of regulation*. Miss A. E. Morgan : Referred to paragraphs 5 and 7 regulations aa to salary. Leave of absence granted as follows :—Miss M. Best, Kauaersnga Boys' School, three weeks' illness. Travelling allowances authorised as under:—Mr. J.S. Burns (Queen's Redoubt), 15s 10d ; Mr. C. T. Edwards (Mercer), £1 0s 8d ; Mr. C. A. Walter (VVhatawhata to Pakaru, £10 already advanced), £11 3s 8d; Mr. G. B. Reid (Oruru to Bunua), £9 Hβ sd; Mr. R. C. Maulaurin (Hautapu to Ardmore), £7 ; Mr. A. C. Dunning (to We>tekauri), 19a 6d. Requisitions (Noa. 1321 and 1322) for furniture and appliances have been dealt with." Report adopted with the alteration that with respect of the Rotorua school alternative tenders should be obtained for the employment of kauri and rimu. Girls' High School.—The Visiting Committee reported that the Government had decided to set apart the land known ae "surplus in Walton's land claim," and 4898 acres, as an endowment for the school onion under the Act of 1878. Building: The committee recommended that application be again made to Government for a grant for a new building on thG Howe-street site, and failing such grant, that Government be asked for a loan for tbe purpose, on the security of the endowment. The committee submitted the report of the headmaster for the term ended 14th May last, that Mr. Cnmwell be employed for an hour and a-half in each week to direct instruction iu singing ; and with regard to the application of Mr. Trevithick for permission to teach the violin, that there way no suitable accommodation in the present buildings. They recommended the purchase of 39 new desks of the AmerU can pattern, at a cost of £10 14s GJ. They also submitted a statement of income and expenditure for the first four months of 188G, the totals being : Income, £802 6s 10d, and the expenditure, £797 6s 7d. Adopted. Acckland Training College.—The report of the committee on the Training College recommended that Miss F. J, Davis, student, be placed on list for appointment as assistant teacher, when a suitable vacancy occurs. " Your committee recommend that the fees of Miss C. D. Grant, student, for attendance at the University College lectures in Latin, English, and Physics, be paid by the Board. Your committee recommend that in view of the report of the medical examiner, Mr. G. A. Worsley's admission ae a student be limited at the first to a period of three months on trial. Tutor : Your committee suggest that the appointment of a tutor be deferred until the end of June. Training classes : Your committee have examined the list of absences from the Saturday training classes at Auckland and the Thames, on May Bth, loth, and 22nd inst. Your committee have granted the following exemptions : —Miss J. S. Brown, Pakuraaga, on alternate Saturdays during winter months ; Mr. A. Gerring, Kauaeranga, Boys' School, from classes in drawing and drul. Drawing : Your committee have considered the letter dated the 16th of April ult., from the Minister of Education, suggesting the appointment of a drawing master in connection with the Training College. Your cr/m----mittee suggest that a reply be sent describing the school work and the various classes carried on by drawing master, Mr. Walter J. Robinson, and referring to the School of Art already established in Auckland by present liberality. In view of what ia already being done, your committee see no necessity for any further appointment." Adopted. Painting School Buildings.—A circular was read from the Minister of Education stating that the cost of painting school buildings was not to bo included as y.n item of expenditure in the account of moneys granted by vote for public work*, which must only be used for purchasing sites, erecting schools, and extending old ones. Consideration deferred until next week. Newmarket School.—Plans c>l additions to Newmarket School were presented, and their consideration deferred until next meeting, when Mr. Allright would be in attendance, Puriri.—A letter from Puriri Committee re late election, to which a reply was directed to be sent that the election was declared invalid on account of irregularities at tho meeting, and that the question of a fresh election was for the householders, and not for the committee. Commissioners —The Rev.George Stephenson, Messrs. E. Fnssel, C. Sutton, and George Moon were appointed commissioners for Raglan, and Mr. John McLean commissioner for Waipu Cave. Hamilton.—An application from the committee was made asking that the present master of the primary sohool be appointed to conduct the district High School, and stating that at least 12 scholars could attend the school at the commencement of tho quarter. It was agreed that a three months' trial should be given to the proposal. AnnualExaminationofPcpilTkachers. —A circular was read from the Education Department giving the arrangements for carrying on the examination of pupil teachers, commencing June 29. Agreed to. Applications.— Hokianga : The committee wrote re old school building, asking if committee could take charge of it: Agreed to. There was a second application for permission to let school site : Consideration deferred. The Huntly Committee asked for more accommodation : Declined. A request was received from the Kihikihi Committee for permission to lease old school: Deferred. The deferred application from Mercury Bay, for a school at the upper mill, was considered : Deferred. A request was made by the Puni Committee for a teacher's house: Consideration deferred until funds for the purpose were available. The Tararu Committee applied for a grant of £5 for repairs to spouting : Granted. A list of tenders received by Mount Roekill Committee for fencing extra playground were submitted, and recommended acceptance of J. Carpenter, £32 : Agreed to. Appointments oj- Teachers.—The following teachers were appointed :—Mr. McKee, to Maketu; Mr. Nettleship, to Pukete; Mr. Coulter, to Kaeo ; Mr. Gray, to Wade and Wainui. Several reports as to unsatisfactory teaohere were referred to the committee ot the Training College, the accounts were pasted, and the meeting then terminated.
