GOVERNMENT LAND SALE.

One of the largest Bales of Crown lands took place on Thursday morning, at eleven o'clock, in the Crown Lands Office. Mr. D. A. Tole, with his usual proficiency, was auctioneer, and wielded the hammer well. The attendance was very great, between two and three hundred persons being present. The bidding was spirited, and in many cases double and treble the amount of the upset price was realised. The accommodation of the public was not forgotten, every convenience being afforded, and the office management was efficiently carried out by Mr. Etheridge, the chief clerk. The proceeds of the sale will be nearly £7000, about £1600 of which was received as deposit of the purchase money. That the sale was a success, may be gathered from a remark made by Mr. Frater, who stated that it was the largest gathering he bad seen at a Government land sale, at the same time observing that land transactions outside are few, and the Government sale was better attended, and was a more successful one than any he had before attended.
