THE ENGLISH DERBY.

VICTORY OF THE FAVOURITE. Ikkoter's cablegram.?.] London, May 26. The 106 th Derby was run at Kpsom to-day, and resulted iu a victory for Ormonde, The Bard being second, and St. Mirin third, [summary.] The Derby Stakes, of 50sova each, h ft; for colts, 9at; and fillies, Sst 91ba ; then three-yeara-old. About a mile and a halt. The owner of the second horse to receive OOO3OVS, and the third loOsovs from the stakes. 200 subscribers. Duke of Westminster's b 0 Ormonde, by Bend Or—Lily Agnes 1 Mr. R. Peck's ch c The Bard, by Petrarch —Magdalene 2 Mr. Y. R. Graham's b or br 0 St. Mirin, by Hermit—Lady Paramount 3 Nine horses started, Saraband and Gay Hermit being scratched. Ormonde did not make his appearance until late in the season as a two-year old—a wise precaution, as it gave his clever trainer every opportunity of doing justice to the colt. Although engaged in the Middle Park Plate he did not take part in that contcst, but was brought out for a Post Sweepstakes set for decision just previous to that event. Here he had Modwena and Warbler as opponents— 6 to 4 being laid on the former — and the ring was taken by surprise when they saw Ormonde holding her safe all the way home, and achieving an easy victory. The grand racing appearance of the son of Bend Or and Lily Agues did not escape the observation of some of the boat judges of horseflesh, and when, a fortnight later he was brought out for the Criterion, they did not hesitate to lay odds of 6 to 4 on him. His chief opponents were Oberon, Mephisto, and Galais, and, although the firatuamed was in receipt of 41b, he could do nothing I with the Kiugsolere colt, who won in a canter by three lengths, with Mephisto a bad third. His final engagement last season was in the Dewhurst Plate, which is run over a course well qualified to test the stamina of juveniles, and hero he was opposed by Gay Hermit and ten others. Odds of 11 to 4 had to be laid on the son of Bend Or, who fully justified the confidence reposed in him by winning in a canter by four lengths from hia stable companiou, Wbitefriar. When the three-year events began to be talked about, Ormonde's name was soon placed in a prominent place. For the Two Thousand Guineas, ran last month, he was made % warm favourite, which he won, the speedy Minting following him home. This performance, of course, brought him into still greater promise for the Derby, and the day before the race he was quoted at 2to 1. A a usual, the telegram announcing the result of the Derby fails to tell us how the race was run, and we must therefore await further details by mail. Ormonde was got by Bend Or, who in turn was got by Doncaster from Rouge Rose, by Thormanby from Ellen Home, by Redshank from Delhi, by Plenipotentiary ; and his dam Lily Agnes, by The Cure from Miss Agnes, by Birdcatcher from Agnes, by Clarion from Annette, by Priam. It will therefore be seen that Ormonde comes from a great racing family, for his sire Bend Or won the Derby of 1SS0: his grand sire Doncastor, the Derby of 1573; his great grand sire Stockvrcll, the St. Leger of 1552 ; and, going still further back, we find his great - great grand sire, The Baron, winning the St. Leger of 1845. The Duke of Westminster must certainiy be considered one of the luckiest noblemen that has yet figured on the British turf. To win the " blue riband " three times in six years is without doubt a great feat, and beats even the great treble victory gainod by Sir Joseph Hawley in the years 1859, IS6O, and 1863, with Beadsman, Musjid, and Blue Gown respectively ; but going back to 1851 we find Teddington carrying Sir Joseph's colours to victory, so that he claims one more winner thau the Duke of Westminster. The Duke followed closely in the footsteps of " the lucky baronet" in another way, for as the latter bred Beadsman, who in alter years begat Blue Gown, so, too, does the squire of Eaton boast of a like achievement, for he bred Bend Or, the sire of this year's winner, Ormonde. Some idea of the princely manner iu which the Duke of Westminster laid the foundation of bis now famous stud at Eaton may be gathered from the fact that he paid no less than £14,000 for Doncaster alone. Though Archer rode Ormonde in all his races last year, the chances are that Cannon would have the mount in the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, as it was freely given out prior to the departure of the last mail that The Bard would have Archer's services. Should Cannon have had the mount on Ormonde in the Two Thousand and Derby, he has repeated his great feat of 1832 when he steered Shotover to victory, for the same nobleman. Ormonde was trained by John Porter, of Kingaclare, who has during tho past few years made a great, name for himself. In 1883 he trained the Derby winner St. Blaise, and last year after winning the Two Thousand with Paradox, the latter was only beaten a head for the " blue riband," and afterwards won the Grand Prix de Paris. The Bard proved himself a perfect wonder as a two-year-old, winning tho whole of the sixteen races for which he was pulled out, which represented a sum in stakes bordering close upon £10,000. His party, it is needless to say, had a great opinion of him for the "blue riband," and he was specially prepared for that race. Unfortunately The Bard is not engaged in the St. Leger. St. Mi kin started on three occasions as a two-year-old, but was unsuccessful on each occasion. He is engaged in the St. Leger. The following is a list of the winners of the Derby for the past twenty-four years :—
