Customhouse : Entered Outwards.— Kaikoura, K.M.s.s., Crutchley, for Wellington ; Orpheus, schooner, Taw, for Port Derby. Yesterday the schooner Opotiki was sold by auction by Messrs. E. and A. Isaacs, under instructions from the mortgagee. The vessel realised £100, Messrs. J. and D. Oxley being the purchaser!. The barque Lutterworth is to be berthed at the Queen-street Wharf, and there will load for London, following the barque Waimea, of the N.Z.S. Co.'e line, and which is now almost a full ship. < The Colonial Government steamer Hinemoa arrived from Wellington, via Whangarei. early yesterday morrang, and was berthed at the JJailway Wharf. There she was engaged during yesterday in taking in a quantity of railway material, etc., for the South. She ie expected to get away to-day, and it is likely that she may tow down to Dunedin the hulk Clara Hargreavee. . The Shaw, SUvill, and Albion Co.'s steamship Arawa hft London for Auckland direct on the 22nd instant. From this port the Arawa is to proceed on to Wellington, then back to Napier ; from there she will go to Dunedin, and on to Lyttelton. The cutter Lizzie is to go hence to the Kimberley goldfield, and ie to follow the schooner Orpheus. The latter vessel is to sail about Monday next. The torpedo boat attached to this port—after a long lieAup in quietness—was brought out again into active service yesterday; During the day she was out for practice. The steamship Kaikoura, of the N.Z.S. Co.'s_ Eoyal Mail line, was kept busily engaged thronghout yesterday in putting out her cargo for this port, and also for ports on the East Coast. To get at this ii large portion of her cargo for Donedin and other Southern ports j had to be lauded, and this has to be again shipped to the Kaikoura for conveyance to its dentination. The Kaikoura is to leave here at 11 a.m. to-morrow, her next port of call being Wellington. As the 101.a.5. Alameda is expected to be able to reach here during tonight, the authorities have decided to remove tho Kaikoura this evening orf from the wharf into the stream. The schooners Christina and Norval, both from Rutsell with coal, and the Saucy Kate ■with 35,000 feet of timber, all arrived in harbour yesterday. The s.a. Southern Cross left last evening for East Coast ports with cargo and passengers. The schooner Gem has been successfully floated off the reef off Motuihi, and was yesterday morning brought up the harbour, being supported by the bargee Mabel and Lake Superior. The work of raising the schooner was entrusted to Mr. D. Gouk, and that gentleman lyis lost no time in completing hie job. The schooner will be taken up on Mr. Gouk's Blip to-day for a complete repair. Several of tho .small crafts in the harbour ■were gaily dressed with bunting yesterday, in honour of the marriage of Mr. J. Henderson, son of Mr. Henderson (of Henderson and Spraggon), shipbuilders, etc. The barque \7enona sailed from (Newcastle for this port on tho 16th inst., with a cargo of 700 tons of coal. With a view to increasing the steam commasication with the smaller porta and places ou the Eiat Coast, the Union Steamship Company have decided to make regular monthly calls each way at Hick's Bay, Awanui, Tuparoa, Waipiru, Tokomaru, and Tolago Bay. This service will be commenced by the s.s. Southern Cross, from Auckland, on June 8, and by the B.a. Maitai, from Wellington, ont he same date, and it' is hoped that the enterprise of the company will be rewarded. COLOUR TESTS. The following additional regulations for the examination of masters and mates came into force April 1 last :— 1. Examinatidna in colour are open to any person Serving or about to serve in the mercantile marine. a. Any person, including the holders of certificates of competency, or persons about to apply for certificates of competency, i.' desirous of being examined in colours only, must make application to a superintendent of a mercantile marina office (Customhouse), and pay a fee of 2s (i<l. 3. He must Attend for examination at the examiner's oflice, and it lie passes he will receive a certificate to that clfect. 4. If he fails, it will he open to him to bo examine! again in colours as often as he pleases, on payment of tho fee of 23 6il at each fresh attempt. 5. The application of a candidate who is presenting himself for examination for a master's or mate's certificate must be made on Form Exn. 2. Such examination will commence with the colour test; and 11 the candidate does not, at the time of making application, hold a certificate of competency of any grade and should fail to distinguish correctly anyone of the colours used in'.the test, He will not be allowedJt proceed with the examination in navigation and sea znanship. 6. The fee he has paid for examination for a certifi cato of competency will include the fee for the coloui test, and, with the exception of 2s 6d, will, in sue! event, be returned to htm. 7. A candidate for examination for a certificate o competency, who, at the time of making application does not possess a certificate, and who fails to pas. the colour teat, may not be re-examined., until afte the lapse of three months from the date of his firs failure. If he fails a second time, be will be allowcc a third trial at the expiration of another three month: from the date of his second failure, a fresh fee mus be paid at each succeeding examination. 8. It is therefore obviously to the advantage o: candidates for certificates of competency to apply ii the fint instance to be examined in colours only. 9. A candidate who holds a certificate of coinpe tency, and who, oh presenting himself for examina tion for a certificate of a higher grade, is unable t< pass the colour test, will, notwithstanding, be per mitted to proceed with the culmination in navigation

and seamanship for the certificate of the higher grade. | 10. Should he pass this examination, the following statement wtll be written on the (ace of the higher certincaie which may be granted to him-namely, " Tliia officer has failed to pass the examination in colour*." ~ ,_ 11.
