RAILWAYCONCESSIONS TO COUNTRY SETTLERS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — With your permission I shall endeavour to place before your readers an incident in reference to the above, which was brought about through a request made by the committee of the South Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association to Mr. Hudson, the present manager of railways aft Auckland. At a committee meeting held in April it \r&a resolved that the secretary write to Mr. Hudson, requesting that return tickets at market rates be issued from all stations to Pukekohe on the 29th April, out "how day. To our astonishment Mr. Hudson's reply was that too many con. cessions had already been made to the public, and consequently our request could not be entertained. I need scarcely state that on reading Mr. Hudson's reply we were discouraged and disappointed, inasmuch aa a great number of friends from Auckland and other districts had promised to attend the show, and doubtless would have dona so had the inducement asked for been granted, and we are still feeling convinced that the department would have benefited very considerably by granting the concession. Notwithstanding the obstacles of tha department we still progress, and as is apparent from your reporter's account in your issue of the 30 April, our first annual cattle show was a decided success. It iB true our committee were not in a posi« tion to offer Mr. Hudson £20 or £30 for » special train from Auckland. The show waa got up through the spirit and pluck of a few go-ahead settlers, and thanks to their energy, and to the liberality of so many of our Auokland friends giving special prizes in the way of encouragement, our show was brought to a successful issue,—l am. &0., James Roulstone.
