MERCER R.M. COURT.-FRIDAY. [Before Captain Jackson, R.M., and Major Te Wheoro, Assessor.] Nqawjiara v. Reawhanake.— Claim, £12 for two cows. Mr. Skid more acted as interpreter. The plaintiff and the defendant I agreed to have the case heard before the above Bench. The evidence went to show that the defendant took the two cows from plaintiff's paddock, when the plaintiff was absent from home in the month of September, ISB4. This case occupied the Court from ten a.m. to five p.m. Five witnesses were examined for the plaintiff, and eight witnesses for the defendant. Judgment for [ plaintiff for £7 10s, with costs £7, 4s. I Mr. Thomas Clarke McElroy was here sworn in as a Justice of the Peace by Captain JacksoL R.M., and then took his seat on the Bench for the first time.] Mabky v. Fagan.—Trespass for pigs, £2. Mr. Griffiths appeared for the defendant. The evidence in this case went to show that the_ defendant's pigs trespassed upon land which the plaintiff had occnpied, and paid rates for, since the year 877, the owner being absent from the district during that time. The defence was that the land was not the plaintiff's, and that the defendant was about to purchase the land which bad been trespassed upon, and that the plaintiff had no right to the land in question. Judgment for plaintiff for £2, with costs £2. The appointment of Mr. Thomas Clarke McElroy to be a Justice of the Peace gives great satisfaction throughout this district.—* [Own Correspondent],
