THE PROPOSED PACIFIC CABLE.

The visit of Sir A. Stuart and Mr. Want to Ottawa (writes the London correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald on April 9) is not, after all, likely to prove fruitless. The Dominion Government seems not indisposed towards a guarantee for the cable, and the same remark applies to Hawaii. The United States authorities also look favourably upon this Pacific cable project. The whole matter, however, is still in an initial stage, so that one cannot do more than record the friendly disposition of the Washington authorities, and the favourable impressions that have been produced upon the minds of Sir A. Stuart and Mr. Want by those whom they have seen. If one or more of the Australian Governments would take the initiative in a subsidy guarantee, it is obvious that the scheme would have considerable prospect of success.
