THE New Zealand Herald AND DAILY SOUTHERN CROSS. TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1886.
Hostilities between the Greeks and Turks, as will be seen from this morning's cables, have been renewed, resulting in the repulse of the Turks, who had attempted to seize Mavro or Messeno Pass. And again the statement is repeated from Athens that this fresh outbreak was the consequence of some misunderstanding. The meaning put upon this representation of | the affair is, as expressed by us in yesterday's issue, that it is adopted by the peace party for the purpose of concealing the true facts of the case. The real truth is that the excitement of the opposing armies has risen to such a pitch that it cannot be controlled by the authorities or commanders on either side. And this state of feeling, as now appears on the authority of the Greek Minister, has been largely brought about by the blockade i which the combined fleet so stupidly attempted to enforce. Tn addition to its having become a cause of rupture among the Powers themselves it has so inflamed the Greeks, and encouraged the Turks, that it is difficult to see how all that can be done by the Porte or by the Greek Government will suffice to restrain their military ardour. It may at all events be safely concluded that after • what has occurred hostilities will certainly be resumed unless a pledge is given that the claims of Greece will be forth with satisfied, and of that there is at present no apparent pros- ■ pect.
