Shipping business during yesterday was at a standstill, owing to the day being a Customs holiday. The various vessels were nil gaily dressed with bunting, in honour of the Queen's Birthday, and the wharf throughout the day proved a most attractive promenade. No doubt the fineness of the weather added materially to its popularity. The whaling barques Splendid and Othello arrived at Dunedin on Sunday evening last. The steamers Wellington, for Tauranga, Clansman for Russell and Northern ports, and Argyle for Mercury Bay and Tairua, are all to leave this evening. The s.s. Kaikoura came into harbour last evening, after a fine run up from Wellington. The steamship is originally from London, but en route she called at Dunedin and Wellington, there to land mails and passengers. The Kaikoura, owing to the berth at the end of the Queenstreet Wharf being resorved for the mail steamer Mararoa, had to anchor in the stream, and Captain Crutchley felt very much annoyed i that his vessel—also being a mail steamer — should not bo permitted to be at once berthed, instead of her having to anchor in the stream. He considered that he should have had equal privileges with the San Francisco mail steamer, and believes that when two mail vessels are due it should be a case of " first come first served." However, there was one rule, and consequently the harbour authorities — represented by Pilot Cooper—could do nothing else than obey the , instructions given, and anchor the Kaikoura in the stream. She is, however, to be berthed to-day, and will at once procsed with the landing of her cargo for this port, upon completion of which she will proceed on to Wellington again. The Kaikoura on her outward run made the passage to Dunedin from Plymouth in 40 days 7 hours 3 minutes, the actual steaming time having been 39 days 15 hours 3 minutes. The passage throughout has proved a most enjoyable one, all the officers from Captain Crutchley downwards doing all in their power to make the time pass as pleasantly as possible, and from the passengers we learn that in this direction they proved most successful. Like other vessels of the New Zealand Shipping Co.'s line the Kaikoura comes into harbour in excellent order, everything on board being clean and trim. She brought for London 271 bags mail, of which 45 were for this port, and in the landing of the latter Captaiu Crutchley lost no time. For Auckland the Kaikoura brought 05 passengers, five of whom are for transhipment for Napier. Of the passage we learn that the Kaikoura left Plymouth on April 10 at 1.44 p.m., and had dirty weather across the Bay ; thonce light fair winds to Medeirn, which was reached on April 14 at 4 a.m. ; after coaling, left again tho same day at 11 a.m., and had very light trades and the usual weather to the equator. Cape Verde was passed on the 17th at 6.10 p.m. After crossing the line, had freah to strong head winds, finishing in a head gale of two days' duration. Arrived at Tablo Bay on April 29 at 6.21 p.m., and left next day at 0.35 a.m. After leaving the Cape had light head winds and thick fogs, then fresh to strong northerly and southerly winds until May 10, when experienced strong southerly gale and very high sea, during which the ship was hove to for more than 12 hours. From thence had unsteady winds and dirty unsettled weather, with low barometer, until the 20th, when the first westerly wind sprung up, and freshened until, on the morning of the 21st, it plew a whole gale, with furious nq'-nlls. Sighted Snares at 2.27 p.m. on the 20th, aud arrived at Port Chalmers at 8.10 a.m. on the 21st. The mails ware then transhipped to the tug Plucky, but it was found impracticable to tranship the passengers. Left Port Chalmers at 2 p.m. and arrived at Wellington at 1.20 p.m. on the 22nd; landed passengers and proceeded again, after coaling, for Auckland, at 6.47 a.m. on tho 23rd. Had light and variable airs and fine weather up the coast, anchoring at 9.10 p.m. The following are tho names of th« Kaikoura's officers :—Chief officer, Mr. T. Q. East; second officer, Mr. C. A." Milward ; third officer, Mr. J. W. Croncher ; fourth officer, Mr. H. J. Blanchard ; surgeon, Mr. E. K. Paifitt; chief engineer, Mr. J. F. Black; second engineer, Mr. J. H.
