THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY.

The citizens of Auckland will again show their loyalty and patriotism to-day by holding high holiday in honour of the birth* day of our Most Gracious Sovereign lady Queen Victoria, Empress of India, &c, and, there being a bright promise of Queen's weather, there will, we have no doubt, be a general turnout of the publio to enjoy the various forms of outdoor sports and amusements which have been prepared for their delectation. The only water excursion proposed is that of the Northern S.S. Company's Clansman to that ever-popular place of holiday resort, the island home ot Sir George Grey. THE VOLUNTEER REVIEW. Of course, as a feature of the day's proceedings, and as a display of loyalty, the volunteer review will take precedence. The whole of the volunteers, except the " A " Battery, will assemble at the Metropolitan ground at the rear of Government House, in review order, at eleven o'clock sharp, and the "A" Battery will muster at the Drill - shod at the same hour, and thence proceed to tho Albert Park with their two Armstrong gun*, and from that site they will fire the/Vi/ dc.joie. Meantime tho other battalions will have formed in the Metropolitan ground, and after the usual preliminary movements, will bo formed in lino and fire the feu de joi?, after which, being joined by the Artillery, the usual march past will take place. The military spectaclo will, no . doubt, attract large numbers, but due provision has been made to keep the parade ground clear, and prevent the public from interfering with the movements of the troops. For sometime past the three battalions have been practising for this review, and we have no doubt that they will acquit themselves creditably. TAKAPUNA JOCKEY CLUB'S MEETING. This popular club hold a day's racing, and it will no donbt draw a large attendance. The sporting correspondent deals in another column with the various events to be decided. AUCKLAND COURSING CLUB. The Birthday meeting of the Auckland Coursing Club, at the Plumpton Park, Papatoitoi. offers an additional attraction, especially to those who enjoy coursing, and the Shareholders' Stakes, which are to be run off to-day, have already excited a good deal of interest. The "draw" took place on Friday (night, and leaves forty-one dogs} to compete for the stakes. Amongst those are some_ really splendid dogs, which are well backed by their owners, and recent examinations at the park show that hares are plentiful, and in good form, so that there is every prospect of keen and exciting sport. Mr. C. Wallnutt, the secretary of the club, a veteran lover of the leash, was unanimously appointed judge, in the room of Mr. Henderson, who is unable to attend on account of illnega. Mr. T. Flotcher has consented to act as slipper ; Mr. Macready is flag steward, and Messrs. W. A. Fenton and D. Geary slip stewards. To vary the amusement there will also be a trotting match in the park, for which six have accepted. Mr. T. McEwen, of the City Buffet, will provide luncheon at moderate charges, and it is satisfactory to observe, from an announcement in our advertisement columns, that the club, following the example set by several racing clubs, will rigidly prohibit games of chance on the ground. The railway authorities have laid on a special train, which will leave the Auckland station at 20 minutes past 10 o'clock, stopping at intermediate stations for passengerß, and will laud the passengers in close proximity to the grandstand, returning in the evening at 5 o'clock sharp. OPERA HOUSE. . " My Partner," a play new to Auckland, will be produced at the Opera House this evening by Mr. Geo. Rignold and his dramatic company, who arrive from the South to day. Both the company and the piece are highly spoken of.
