BOARD OF EDUCATION.

* The usual meeting of the Board of Education took place yesterday.' Present: Messrs. S. Luke (chairman), J. H. Upton, J. W. Carr, Theo. Cooper, and D. Goldie. Chairman's Report.—The following is the chairman's report Epsom : Committee have been asked for reply to the Board's letter re proposed appointment of teachers. Katikati North : Committee have been referred to re provisions of Act and Amendment Act as to enforcing compulsory attendance. Mauku: Mr. Crispe informed that the committee of 18S5 continue to hold offico until the appointment of their successors. Mercer : Notice sent to Official Assignee in the estate of Mr. N. G. Lennox as to amount payable by the Board for books supplied to school library. Miranda : Committee authorised to expend £4 from school fund on repairs to Kai a-wai schoolroom. Tauranga : Committee furnished at their request with the applications and testimonials of candidates for head teachership ; explanation sent the committee as to time and place fixed for annual and second meetings of householders. Kamo Committee asked lor reply to Board's letter of April 19 regarding the engagement of Miss Holman. The report was adopted. Tkn'dkks. — The following tenders were received for school buildings, Devonport : — Henry Pitts, £615 (accepted); A. Burns, F. Duder, £6Si> ; £093 ; H. T. Oliver, £717 ; VV. H. Barriball, £789 10s; Haywood and Martin, £531. Puriri.—Tho protest against the election of the school committee was consideredMr. Cripp appeared to support the protest, It was decided that the election be declared invalid, and that election of new committee take place in the schoolroom on the evening of June 7, Rot hua. —Plans and specifications for school building, Rotorua, approved, and it was decided to call for tenders. Mauku.—Lands of Messrs. Adolph and others to be added to Mauku school district. Library Grants. —Grants given to Nelsonstreet, Cambridge, and Te Aroha schools. Katikati.—Agreed to grant aid to school. EastTamaki.—Application for new closets deferred. Ihi ihi, —Government to be communicated with before disposal of old school site. Otonua.— Completion of school building authorised. Point Chevalier.—Application for a school deferred. School committees of Avoudale, Morningside, and Ponsonby to be asked to report on application. Qcken's Redoubt. — Agreed to remove school to sohool reserve. Taotaoroa.—Grant for fencing allowed. Remokra,—Board agreed to contribute half cost of painting school. Application for additional class room was deferred till after Epsom School opened. Epsom.—Mr. Mackintosh was appointed to Epsom School. Appointments of Teachers.—A large number of appointment were considered. Accounts.—The ordinary accounts were duly passed for payment.
