THE SAMOAN AMBASSADORS.
[BY telegbaph.—press ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday The Samoan chiefs had a long interview with ilia Excellency the Governor and the Hons. Messrs. Tole and Ballance this morning. The Government are taking action in the matter, bat in what direction it has not yet been allowed to transpire. Oar Wellington correspondent telegraphs : —The Samoan envoys had a long interview with the Hon. Mr. Ballance this morning. They are evidently well pleased with their reception. In the course of the afternoon I was favoured with an interview with the Native Minister, who informed me that the state of affairs in Samoa would bo strongly pressed upon the Agent-General, in order that be might be in a position to lay before the Imperial Government the whole case, ifrom what I could gather, the disclosures made by the Samoan chiefs caused considerable surprise. I have heard that the conduct of the Germans is considered to afford the fullest justification for the complaints of the King of Samoa and his chiefs. I also understand that the Imperial Government will be asked to interfere in some active form for the protection of the King, the native chiofs, and British subjects. " For my part," said the Native Minister, "I should prefer that some arrangement could be made for the purchase of Samoa, either by the British Government, or by the Government of New Zealand. I consider that the money required for the purchase would be a splendid investment, even if it were purchased by the English authorities. I should regret if it were to be made a Crown colony. There is already there the machinery for regular government, and the administration by the Grown through nominees would throw the place back for many years. Tho King of Samoa and the chiefs are anxious for annexation to New Zealand."
