THE NEW ZEALAND CABLE.
TEN YEARS' SUBSIDY DEMANDED. THREAT TO RAISE THE TARIFF. NEW CABLE PROPOSED. INSTRUCTIONS TO THE AGENTGENERAL. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] __ Wellington, Monday. Dr. Lemon this afternoon received a cablegram from the Eastern Extension Cable Company stating that the company refuse to agree to the terms decided upon by the New Zealand Parliament, and that the company would hold out against any reduction in the cable charges. With reference to the refusal of the Eastern Extension Cable Company to accept the Government's proposals re cable subsidy, Sir J. Vogel wires from Waiwera as follows; —" The Cable Company have sent a cablegram to the effect that they will raise the tariff unless we give a subsidy for 10 years, and then they will insist on a minimum of ten words, and a Press guarantee ; or they will take a subsidy for five years without the proposed reduction of the present charges. I have refused to entertain the proposition, and have cabled to the AgentGeneral to aacortain the cost of making and laying a new cable from the principal makers. The cost to the colony would, I believe, be less."
