FREE SCHOOL OF ART.
A competition time study for students of the Free School of Art took place on Saturday, at the Museum Building, under the supervision of Mr. Konneth Watkin. The competition was for outline drawing from life, and the time allowed was two hours. There were seven competitors, viz., Misses Ansley, White (2), Cheeeeman, Brown, Martin, and Galbraith. The drawingi were all excellent, and reflect credit on the instructor in painting and drawing, Mr. Watkin. Mr. Albin Martin has acted as examiner for four or five yeare past, but owing to illness was unable to do so this year. Mr. Gifford kindly undertook the task, and awarded Miss Brown the first place, and Miss F. White second place. A competition time study of drawing from the round took place yesterday, the following young ladies being the competitors :— Misses Cochrane, West wood (2), Corbett, Havill, and Martin, For some time past a number of the senior students have beon engaged in copying in water and oil several of the pictures in the Mackelvie collection, with most satisfactory results. Mrs. Whitney, an artist who has only been in the colony a Bhorb time, has also been engaged in this department. It has been suggested that there should be an exhibition of the year's work done by the students, in order that it may be seen what is being done in the school. If this suggestion were adopted and regularly adhered to, it would, no doubt, be productive of good results, and more
students would avail themselves of the advantages offered, by the school in the matter of instruction in drawing and painting. It may be mentioned that all the students at present are young ladies.
