THE UNEMPLOYED.
YksTiSRIUY morning the men whose names had been received by Colonel Sir G. S. Whitmore oa the previous day to the number of twenty, wont over to the North Shore to cotnnience work at Mount Victoria. A number besides those whoso Dames had been taken were ready to go over, but were told that they could not be engaged at the present time. The men were set to work, nmler the superii-tendc-nee of Mr. V:ckerruau, to prepare tor the defence workn on Mount Victoria. Mr. Council interviewed Sir li. S. Wuitmore yesterday, and he said that when the pluus are completed thirty more men can be taken on at Mount Victoria. It has been said that the Government were about to make the approaches to the bridge at Cox's Creek, and that they could employ about forty men there.
