NEWMARKET BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held in the Hall last night. Present:—The Mayor (Mr. W. J. Suiter), Messrs. Tait, Keesing, Bishop, Burgess, Whisker, Morgan, Edgerley. Bye-laws.—The consideration of Bye-law No. 1 was resumed. In Clause 4re lighting fires in back yards, it was amended by allowing no firgj to be lighted after dark, or within six feet of any fence. Clause 16 was amended so as to read that no goods should be exposed for sale more than six Inohes over the street line. An amendment to prohibit the axposure of goods on the street was lost. Clause 20 re harnessing goats and dogs in the street was excised. Clause 60 was amended by prohibiting the opening of any store for trading on Sunday, exoept chemists, which may be open between eight and nine a.m. and after eight p.m. In Clause 79 re licensing of slaughter-houses it was agreed that the killing of swine should be prohibited. The following motions were then agreed to : —That by-law No. 1 be now adopted, that a copy of it be forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, that on the receipt of his acknowledgment, and the powers conferred by sections 339 and 340 of tho Munioipal Corporations Act, 1876, and the several Acts amending the same, and of other powers in the said Acts being complied with, "That this Council hold a special meeting on the 15th September next ensuing, to confirm this by-law, and that it come into operation on the Ist day of October, 1885. Tenders.—Before opening and accepting a tender for kerbing and channelling upon the main road when widened, it wan agreed that the Mayor and Messrs. Tait and Edgerley guarantee a loan of £200 from the Bank to meet this contract and current expenditure. It was then resolved to return the deposits of the tenderers, and pay a sum of two guineas to the lowest tenderer. It was resolved to allow two roads to be laid off out of the reserve, for which a Bill is now in the House. The consideration of the Local Finance, and Hospital, and Charitable Aid Bills was deferred.
