WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

[by telegraph.—OWN CORRESPOND IST.] Cambribgk, Monday evening. The sale of the Town Board endowment* took place at the Town Board offices to-day at twelve o'clock. There was a large attend* ance. The whole of the sections were sold at advances on the upset price, ranging from five shillings per acre per annum. The net result will increase the revenue of the Board over fifty pounds per annum.

The meeting of the Cambridge Domain Board was held on Saturday last. A letter from Mr. E. Hewitt was received, requesting the permission of the Board to transfer his allotments 27 ana 28 to Thomas Brown. The request was granted. It was resolved that permission be granted to the Town Board to remove gravel from the Domain Reserve, on condition that the pit be left to the satisfaction of the Board. It Wu resolved that Mr. Tucker's offer to lease section 90 be accepted, provided he aovri grass seed with the turnips. It was left with Mr. Fisher to arrange with Mr Tuoker. Accounts were passed for payment as follows Hamblin. £4 4a ;T. Brown, £20 • F. A. Whitaker, £5 sa. '

A numerously attended meeting of ratepayers took place in the Oddfellows' Hall on Saturday, to consider the action taken by certain members of the Town Board regarding the works now being carried on in Lake, street. A requisition had been made to the Chairman of the Board, Mr. J. Houghton asking him to call a meeting; but that gentleman declined to do so, on the ground that the matter in question would be discussed at the next meeting of the Board. A meeting, however, was held by 43 ratepayers, representing a majority of the votes on the roll. The cnalr was occupitd by Mr. J. Gwynneth, The following [resolutions were carried :—"This meeting taking into comsderation the recent unauthorised expenditure in Lakestreet by certain members of the Town Board, who have thus acted in an illegal manner, desires to express its disapproval of that action." "Seeing that a resolution of the Board has been passed that the Streets Committee may not expend a larger sum than five pounds without authority to do so having been given at a properly constituted meeting of the Board, and that In the present instance that resolution has been ignored, this meeting would request that the Board will refuse to pay the account for the work in Lakestreet for any sum exceeding five pounds." "That considering the present financial position of the Board, this meeting is of opinion that the work in Lake-street was not urgently required, especially as several other works of greater importance were refused on the plea of want of money ; and also that the Chairman of the Board had neglected his duty in not stopping the work when he saw it commenced." " That this meeting deeply deplores the action of the Chairman of the Board in refusing to call a meeting .v'nen requested by the ratepayers, thus burking inquiry, and, in fact, defying public opinion; such action being calculated to destroy all confidence for the future." " That a copy of these resolutions be handed to the Chairman of the Board by Commissioner Hughes, with the request that they be read at the next meeting of the Board." "That this meeting expresses its approval of the action taken by Mr. Hughes, and considers that he is deserving of the thanks of the ratepayers."

Mr. Dewsbury referred in his sermon on Sunday morning to the proposed establishment of a Rationalistic association here, deprecating such a movement. It ia understood that he will deliver a series of Sunday evening lectures on Rationalism and Free Thought. Feeling runs very strong on the subject here.

Hamilton, Monday evening. Mr. Vincent E. Rice arrived last night to conduct the district scholarship examination, which will be commenced to-morrow.
