VOLUNTER ITEMS.

Royal Veterans.—The usual weekly drill of the Royal Veteran Rifles waa held in the Drill-shed last night. Thore was a muster of 32, under command of Captain Anderson and Lieutenants Hitohens and Chapman. This corps will have class-firing at the Mount Eden Kange on Saturday. Hobson Rules. —This company had their usual weekly drill in the Drill-shed last night, when there was a muster of 29, under command of Lieutenant Clifton, who put the parade through a steady hour's drill. Q ken's Own Rin.ES.—The Queen's Own had their usual drill in the Railway-shed last night, when there was a good muster, under command of Captain Koep. A Battery Artillery. — The annual meeting of the battery was held last evening. Captain Payne, in taking the chair, congratulated tho company on its progress during the past year, adding that his battery was the oldest of any company in New Zealand. The balance-sheet was adopted on the motion of Gunner Payne, seconded by Sergeant Lipscombe. Lieutenant Qeddes whs proposed for the office of treasurer, but declined, and Sergeant Allen was unanimously elected for the third time to that office. Gunner Miller was elected secretary, and the following gentlemen were elected a committee of management :— Sergeants Henderson and Lipscombe, Sergeant Ansel!, Gunners Webster, Forewood, Rutland and Shaw. Sergeant Lipscombe, and Gunners Forewood and Woolley were appointed auditors for the ensuing year. Votes of thanks were recorded to the outgoing committee and treasurer for past services. Mr. Woolley considered there was something more than a vote of thanks due to the treasurer, and proposed that Sergeant Allen receive a recognition to the value of £5. This was seconded by Gunner Webster, and carried, and Sergeant Allen, in appropriate terms, returned thanks. Lieutenant Norrio spoke in high terms ef the servioes rendered by Captain Payne in furthering the interests of the battery, and said he should like to see some recognition given to him for his servioes. The consideration of this matter was held over, and the question of having the battery lepresented at the Colonial Prize Firing was discussed. A proposition was oarried that £20 be voted towards tho expenses of a team to the Intercolonial Rifle Match. It was further decided that an annual ball be held at an early date, and a committee was appointed consisting of Sergeant Allen, Norwood, Simcock, Lipscombe, and Miller, and the officers, with power to add to the number of the committee. A discussion arose re a drill instructor, and Captain Payne stated that he would lay the complaint before Colonel Whitmore. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
