NEWMARKET AFFAIRS IN THE HOUSE.
(BY TELEGRAPH,—SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.]
Wellington, Monday. The following clause will be added to the Rating Act Amendment Act, to meet the difficulty in levying rates payable to the late road board:—"Notwithstanding that the Borough of Newmarket was constituted after the 15th January, in the current year, the Borough Council thereof may levy and make rates to all intents and purposes as if such borough had been constituted before the 15th day of January, and in place of borough rates, which cannot be made and levied in said borough for currant year, all such rates as might have been made and levied thereon by the Road Board of the Road District of Newmarkat, had such borough not been constituted, and all such rates shall be deemed to be borough rates." The Governor is empowered by a subsequent clause to take all necessary steps. The Minister for Public Works h»s also telegraphed to Mr. Coom, to arrange, if possible, or a road on each side of the railway line, to connect old Manukau-road with the new main road, and so enable him to close permanently the dangerous crossing ct which complaint has been so often made. If this can be done, he will not object further to the Newmarket Reserve Bill now before the House.
