TRADE IN THE SOUTH SEA ISLANDS.

[by TELEGRAPH.—own correspondent.] Christchdrch, Monday. Tub Times commends the Press Association reporter who accompanied the delegates in the Janet Nicoll for his proposals. It says : —" The reporter advocates the formation of a trading company, and also as a secondary but still important stimulant of trade a plantation company. So far as this part of New Zealand is concerned—we do not speak for Auckland—we should hardly fancy the second of these proposals would get much public or private support. Plantations in tropics are risky, that is, sugar planters make rapid fortunes only to lose them more rapidly. States devoted to the growth of products of a less speculative and fluctuating value are still uncertain possessions. South Sea plantations have ruined many other people besides the Godeffroys. There would be the question of management and control, no small matter for shareholders at » considerable distance."
