THE WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE MEETING.
[BY TKLEQEAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION,] Wellington, Thursday. The Steeplechase Meeting to be held by the Wellington Racing Club at the Hutt tomorrow promises to be a success, if the weather is in its favour. All competing horse* are now here. Tho Southern contingent, consisting of Ravenswood, Berrington, King Arthur, and Silver King arrived this morning, The course is in rather bad condition, and the going is sure to be heavy. For the Trials Steeplechase Faugh-a-Ballagh and Romeo have been backed at short prices, and Ngakuatu and Silver King have also many friends. The Hurdle Race, considering the heavy nature of the course, is a very open one, but Macaroni is most favoured, that is, should Mr. Proffit elect this to be his journey. The Aucklanders, Qailp and Claude, have been backed for a trifle, but at present there is no real wagering on the races. For the Steeplechase it is expected nine out of the twelve acceptors will face the starter, and Ravenswood, with H. Lunn as pilot, holds the pride ef place. Billy-go-by-'em, of the light division, is next in demand. The Steeplechase course is not expected to be such heavy going as in the Hurdles, as while in the latter race the course will in some places be over the horses' hocks, the Steeplechase goes over new country, and only towards the finish does it turn into the course proper.
