[FROM OUR Ij*\'N CORRESPONDENTS.] THAMES, Friday. Dktective Boolan arrested a man named James Albert Glover this morning, a few minutes after receiving the telegram. Glover is charged with stealing £S from Mrs. White, of Onehunga. He admitted the offence. ROTORUA, Friday. Mr. L. M. Grace, M.H.R., arrived here to-day at eleven a.m., on his way to fill the much contested Tauraoga seat. Various grievances for his representation in Parliament are being brought forward, among which is the request for a commission to enquire into the losnes sustained by the pioneer settlers of the district, so that some consideration may be shown to them under the harsh ruliijg of the Thermal Springs Act, and rescue them from the unenviable position in which they have been placed. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Mr. Wybert Reeve had a magnificent " house" at the Theatre Royal to-night, when he took his benefit. " Impulse " was played. The performance was moat successful throughout. By a fire at Southbridge this morning a draper's shop, occupied by Mr. A. Walker, and a fruiterer's shop, owned by Mr. T. Aldwin, were destroyed. The former was cwned by Mr. J. Frame, and insured in New Zealand cfiica for £200. Aldwin's shop was insured in the Liverpool, London, and Globe for £100. About £30 vorth of drapery was saved from the stock, valued at £1100, the insurance on which has not transpired. The origin ia unknown. A four-roomed cottage at Rangiora, owned and occupied by a labourer named William Verral, was burned down this morning. The building and furniture were insured for £150 in the London, Liverpool, and Globe Office. The owner saved only a few articles of bedding and clothing, and lost £40 in notes, which ho put in the parlour. The fire originated in sparks from a fire left burning. Ifc is proposed to hold a flog show in Christchnrch, next month. DUNEDIN, Friday. Lawson, who escaped from the custody of Detective Ede while being conveyed as a prisoner to Invercargill, was recaptured at Shng Valley to-day. Lawson, alias Roberts, was wanted by the police here some time back on a charge of vagrancy. He had been persistently tracked en hie journey through the country.

John Newman was brought up today charged with stabbing a fellow workman, and remanded. Stallard, the wounded man, has recovered sufficiently to leave the Hospital. The Women's Temperance Union kave purchased a building in which they intend holding meetings for the instruction of boys and girls, for giving temporary shelter to the homeless, and for a refuge for persons just out of prison until they get employment. At the Education Board meeting yesterday, it was stated that two out of every five children attending the schools in and around Dunedin were under seven years of age. Harry Shepherd, employed at cutting timber at Lake Wakatipu, committed suicide by shooting himself with a gun. In Chambers, Mr. Justice Williams refused to make an allowance to Hutchinson out of the estate, peudiug his trial.
