What is gas coke ? Gas coke is nearly all carbon, and carbon properly burned will give out, in round numbers. 14,000 units of heat per pound, or very nearly as much as the best English steam coals. Indeed, coal only surpasses it because of the small quantity of hydrogen which it contains nncomblned with oxygen. It is often urged that coke cannot be good as coal Because It has lost all the heat-producing puwor equivalent t« that of the gas driven off. It is quite true that the coke resulting from one ton of coal does not possess the same calorific value as the coal from which It was made. But it must be borne in mind that we are comparing coke with coal weiobt for weiuht. Thus, lOOlbs. of coal produces flSlbs. of coko: so that some 30cwt. of cost is required to produce one ton of coke, and the difference satisfactorily allows for the heat producing power of the gas driven off.
