ST. PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL.

OPENING OP THE 'GRAND ORGAN. The grand organ imported for St. Patrick's Cathedral, which haß been erected with great skill and care by the Rev. Father. Augustine Luck, brother of the Bishop, was, formally opened yesterday (Trinity Sunday). The Rev. Father Patterson, organist and musical director of . St. Joseph's .College, • London, officiated at the instrument, and played the grand and sublime music of . Haydn's . Imperial Mass, with all the finished touch of a master of music, having the control of a grand and powerful instrument. There was a full choir, and the mass was sung in the most effective manner. Pontifical high mass was celebrated at eleven o'clock, the Rev. Father Wissel being celebrant, the Rev. Father ; Kgan deacon, and the-- Rev. Father W. Matoney sub-deacon. His Lordship Bishop Luck assisted in - cdppa magna, assisted by the Very Jttav. Father Walter Macdonald and the Rev. Father Tuckwell, as deacons at tho throne. His Lordship preached a highly impressive sermon on the subject of the Feast of the Blessed Trinity, and also-referred to the organ which had been erected, and urged upon the congregation the necessity of subscribing with their accustomed liberality to pay the cost incurred in procuring an instrument which was a credit to their church, and the best in New Zealand. The largi; congregation assembled responded very liberally, the collection amounting to the handsome total of £267. His Lordship, when the amount was announced, expressed his heartfelt thanks, and prayed that God might bless them for their liberality. In the evening there was again a very large congregation, the church being crowded. . , Ponfcifieial vespers were ; celebrated, His Lordship officiating, with the Very Rev. Father Walter Macdonald as assistant; priest, the Rev. Father Egan deacon, and the Rev. Father Tuckwell subdeacon. The Rev. Father Egau preached an eloquent and.poweirf-.il sermon on the subject of the day, and also alluded to the organ and the grand musical composition of the great composer, Haydn, which they had heard that morning.
