The idea is an old one, and rune through the whole of Robertson's society plays, to some of which "Extremes" bears a oloao resemblance. It is, however, cleverly worked out. The play is fall of strong human interest, and the dialogue is bright and pungent. Last night it was, with two or three exception!, acted with care and effectiveness. The chief honours of the performance must be awarded to Mrs. Chippendale. Her Itnpersonation of the Lancashire farm dame was In every way perfeefc. It was racy of the soil and mightily amusing. Mr. Reeve as Frank Hawthorn was entirely at home. Tbo more, we Bee of this actor the more we like him. He is thoroughly consistent and conscientious 4n all he does, and pUys with an earnestness and studied finish which are arire commendable and artistic. Mr. McGowfcn had a congenial part as Robin Wildbriar, to which he did ample justice. Miss Alice Deorwya was suffering from * severe cold, which greatly marred an excellently conoeived performance. Miss Constance Deorwyn waa pert and telling as the "clever little girl," Jenny Wildbriar. Mr. Steele, as usual, wm admirable (with the exception of his makeup), and the other members of the company acquitted themselves moderately welL Tonight " Diplomacy," one of the most skilfully constructed and powerful playe of recent years, will be produced. It is an adaptation j from the French, and deals with the intrigues and passions of modern society. If well played, this is a piece which should prove one of the greatest theatrical successes ever witnessed in Auckland.
