CITY COUNCIL.

Tus meeting of the City Council was leld last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. W. R. Waddel, presiding), Messrs. Burns, Waymouth, Goldie, Aickm, Crowther, Digman, Devore, - Upton, Maokechnie, Kidd, Masefield, Holland, La Roche, Montague, Connolly, Garratt. Dbivkb's License.—Patrick Tierney applied for a driver's license. It was reported that two convictions had been recorded against him this year.—The breaches not being of a serious nature, the application was granted. Gladstonk-stbeit.—B. McKerras asked the Council to fill in Gladstone-street to the permanent level.—The Engineer reported that no earth was available at present,— Reply to be sent accordingly. Claim.— R. Wilkinson wrote stating that on Saturday last, during the storm, while driving down Upper Queen-street, his horse fell into a hole left unprotected by the Council's workmen. The writer said his hand had been sprained, his horse's legs broken, and the cart damaged. It appeared that a water service was being repaired at the place. It was pointed out that Mr. Wilkinson was on the wrong side of the road, but a storm was raging at the time, and this accounted for his not seeing the hole.—After a short discussion, the matter was referred to the Streets Committee. Cox's Ckekk Bridgk.—The representatives of the Ponsonby Ward were appointed to confer with Mr. Peacock, M.H.R., and the members of the Newton Road Board with reference to the cost of removing the Cox's Creek Bridge. Surplus Earth.— Mr. R. C. Greenwood offered earth from lots 16, 17, 18, and 19, Upper Queen-street, and lots 48 and 49, La wry-street, if the Council remove the earth.—The Engineer reported that there was no immediate need of the earth.—Mr. Crowther thought arrangements might be made for the filling in of Upper Queenstreet at Mr. McKerraa's property, thus greatly improving the street. He said the wooden footpath was in a bad state. —Referred to Streets Committee. Patronage.—Mr. F. Weston wrote asking for tbe patronage of the Council for the farewell concert of M. Reminyi.—The conoert not being for charitable purposes, the patronage wac not granted. Contract. —A report was received from the Engineer re Kirby's contract in Frank-lin-road and Paget-street.— -The matter of enforcing the resolntion of the Council re fully manning the works ,was. left to the City Engineer to carry out Chancery-street. — Messrs. E. Porter and Co. wrote stating that they were prepared to build in Chancerystreet, and if the Council desired to widen the street they would build back into . their . allotment. They offered to sell the land at the rate they purchased it.—Referred to Legal Committee. Burleigh-street.—A letter was received from Mjr:.& Potter re outting of etreeti—Referred to Streets Committee.

Petition.—Mr. Crowther presented, a petition irom James McPherson and twentyon* others, residents of Abercrombie-atreet and vicinity,, pray m g that the street be forthwith fprraed to its proper level, that it be kerbed and channelled, and the footpath asphalted,—Petition received and referred to' Streets Committee. Finance Committed Report.— This committee recommended as follows :— Letter from Thoe. SUtor, re claim for weighbridge, riz., £21 : That tbe sum of £10 be paid. Memo, from Town Clerk, re Market Found : That Mme be diipensed with. Memo, from Engineer Pumping Station, re overtime : That same be paid, and in future any overtime to accompany fortnightly statement. Warner to be planed on same position as Dean, vis., £2 10», and botme and fuel; Second Fireman to receive £2 10s, and .House and fuel. Memo, from Engineer Pumping Station, re addition to cottage, *c. : That two rooms be added, and a dividing fence be placed, and that the small cottage on Edgecombe's estate be sold tor removal. Letter from B. K. Curwon 'asking Council to erect a shed tear of Northern Hotel, Point Chevalier: That a corrugated iron shed 20 z 14, be erected at the rear of Northern Hotel. Be telephone Pumping Station : That a second call be!J be placed at a cost of about £2 10b. Motion No. 062, re KdgeoombVs estate : That the paddocks be leased by amnion until expiration of existing lease o! hotel and paddock in their present condition. Letter from W. Klrby, re contracts : Committee have no recommendation to make. —W. R. Waddil, Chairman.—Report adopted. Streets Committee Eeport.—This committee recommended as follows :— Letter from Thos. Smith re catting Seafleld View Boud : That reply be tent to effect of Engineer's report, namely, plans are about ready for cutting out Seafleld View Road, and the work of cutting will be tendered for immediately. Petitions from residents in Surrey Cr»io«nt acd Mount Eden district re water supply : That reply be sent that Council hare not the plant to lay water mains outside the city. Letter from K. Bartloy re kerbing corner of Queen and Wellesley Streets : That the new kerblng be laid in Qneen-street, from WMlesley-i treet to Butlandstreet, Mr. Stone being instruoted to relay asphalt in front of bit building. Letter from H. Gilfillan re Cemetery Bridge approaches : That Engineer's report bo adopted, namely, that the earth be eloped Into Mr. Gilflllan'e ground, and hie fence lowered, and any new palings required put on; also, that a footway be made as far as bi* entrance, and existing drain-pipes lowered where the slope might expose them. Motion No. 959 (Mr. Connolly): That the lamp be removed, as suigeited, and asphalt crossings be made at Hardlnge, Graham, and Nelson Streets, Welson-street on south side, also. Letter from R. Bew, re wall. College-road : That tbe sum of £10 be offered (without prejudice). Letter from J. N. Kewbold, re wiill, College-road : That the previous offer of £S be adhered to. Petition from resident*, College Hill, 4c, re drainage : That work be deferred ; Engineer to give estimate of cost. Letter from Smith and Caughey, re signboard, Queenstreet: That building regulations be carried out. Petition, residents Cobdeu-siroot re channels, «c. : That channels be kept clean b;r flushing. Petition from residents, O'Neill-atreet, re widening: That effect be given to petitioners' request, provided they pay all costs that may be Incurred in couneotion with same. Letter from F. Earl, re right-of-way Queenstreet: That same be granted tubjeot to usual conditions, viz,, a gate to bo erected and maintained, no building to be erected with frontage thereto, and lane or right-of-way to be asphalted. -W. Cxowthir, Chairman. , —Mr. Crowther moved, "That the clause re kerbing corner of Queen and Wellesley Streets be referred baolc to the committee; and that the report, with this exception, be adopted,"—Mr. Devore moved, "That the clause re widening of O'Neill-street be referred back to th« committee in order that he might consult with the petitioners."— Mr. Crowther said the offer of the residents (£35) was ridiculously small—Mr. Upton said the whole thing waa an attempted plunder on the part of one landowner in Ponsonby. The property in tbe street would be greatly improved in value.—Mr. Devore's and Mr. Crowther'a amendments were carried.—The report as amended was adopted. Tenders.— Tenders were opened as follows for excavation «ection 03; —Larkins and O'Brien, £1327 ; J. Craik, £1275 ; Verronand Co., £1078 2e 6d. Engineer's estimate, £1300. The lowest tender was acoepted. St, Martin's Lane and approach to Cemetery Bridge i T. Katrin, £389 10a ; Archibald, £485 15a ; W. T. Rainbow, £354 12a 4d j W. Hanks, £423; Larkins and O'Brien, £693 15s 6d. Engineer's estimate, £100, Mr. Bainbow's tender was accepted. Clerk by Works.—Thirty-six applications were received for the position of Clerk of Works for the Public Library and Art Gallery.—The applications were referred to the Library Committee to report on the six most eligible.

Domain.—The Domain Committee brought up the following report:—" Memo, from Domain ranger re alteration to gardens in Domain; That work be done as recommended by Mr. Goldie (ranger), at an estimated cost of £56 15s."—The report was adopted.
