The first edition of Mr. Hamerton's volume of/essays, entitled " Human Intercourse," is exhausted, and Messrs. Macmillan have a second edition in the Press. Mrs. Napier Higgins' account of " Women Of Europe in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries" is making progress, and Messrs. Hurst and Blackett hope to issue the first and second volumes early this year. The fourth edition of "Objter Dicta,"* book which has drawn some attention in theatrical circles by its out-spoken utterances concerning the English stage, is about to be published immediately. Under tbe Alleyu Trust a sum devoted by the proprietor of an old theatre in St. Luke's to the maintenance of almshouees in bouthwark has, with exceptionally good fortune, grown to £4000. Miss Helen F. Hetherington ("Helena Gullifer") author of " Trust Her Not," and a vast amount of periodical literature," is engaged on a new novel, the scenes of which are laid in Germany. The old organ of Wesleyan Methodism, the Watchman, ceased to exist at the end of the year. In its place is pnblished a new paper called the Christian Journal, edited by the Rev. W. L. Watkinson, Wesleyan minister. The audience nearly gave way to panic, but were reassured by the actor's coolness, Henry posing u gracefully as possible, and looking on while the firemen put out the flames. A new weekly newspaper haa been published under the title of "The Lady ; ft Journal for Gentlewomen." It is to be eauentially English in ite character, and will represent an attempt to treat fashions, and all other matters in which ladies are concerned, from an English point of view. Nye'e " Anecdotes ;<>n Bible Texts : Epistle to the Romans," has , led him to decide upon completing the New Testament in a similar manner. There will be six more volumee, of which the copy for the first two, on the Epistles to the Corinthians, and to the Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Coloseians, is bow in the hands of the Sunday-school Union Readers' ■
