THE COLONIES AND THE SOUDAN.
Adelaide, March 6. The South Australian Government have received a telegram from the Colonial Office, Baying that if the colony, independently or conjointly, will desbatch a force in time to arrive at Suakim by September, the Imperial Government will gladly accept its service. J&nquiry is made as to the maintenance and training of the proffered troops, and stress is laid upon the importance that the whole contingent should be drilled together for at least a month. The Advertiser newspaper severely condemns the proposal of the despatch of a South Australian contingent to Egypt. Melbourne, March 6. The Victorian Government have received a telegram from Lord Derby similar to that received by the South Australian Government as to the acceptance of further colonial troops for the Soudan. It is improbable the Ministry will do anything in the matter until Parliaament meets. London, March 5. The Earl of Wemyss has given notice in the House of Lords of a motion for the adoption of an address to the Queen, thanking Her Majesty for accepting the local offer of New South Wales, and expressing satisfaction for similar offers by the other colonies, and hoping that these may be accepted at the right time. Mr. Evelyn Aehley, Under Colonial Secretary, announced in Parliament this afternoon that a telegram had been sent to the colonies, stating that if a further force could be despatched to arrive at Suakim by September, the Government would gladly accept its service. ...
